HWPS is celebrating Book Week! The theme this year is Australia! Story Country. Book Week is a chance for us to celebrate one of our favourite things – reading.
Students will receive a Book Week Quiz on Monday and if they return the Quiz to the box in the office by Thursday, the lucky winner will receive a $20 gift card prize from Readings.
All week, teachers will be reading the short listed books and completing activities in our LRC. Click here to read the list of winning books of the year – 2016 for some reading inspiration.
Friday is the big final celebration where all students are invited to dress up as a book character for the HWPS Book Week Parade in the afternoon. Watch out for some Harry Potter fans in the Gr 5/6 teachers!! Who or what will you dress up as?
Each week, our Grade 5 students have a Leadership session where they alternate between visiting their Foundation Buddies with a session of Leadership Skill building.
The 4 building blocks of Leadership are Presentation Skills, Responsibility, Organisation and Teamwork. Students have been taught skills under these 4 headings and for the past few weeks, they used all this knowledge to plan a Mini Olympics for their Foundation Buddies.
The Foundation students had an absolute ball!
Their events included parachute, an obstacle course, relay races, skipping, bean bag throws and sprints. What a terrific afternoon!
Congratulations to all Grade 5 students! You really achieved your Leadership goals and it was a pleasure for the staff to watch you all being so engaged, organised and responsible for your buddies. We are very proud of you all.
Our fabulous HWPS students competed in the Tournament of Minds on Saturday at Deakin Uni. We wish them every success and look forward to hearing their results shortly. A big Thank You to Brianna McIntyre for coordinating the 3 teams each week and for attending the competition on Saturday.
The 3 teams completed the problem solving programme based on Language Literature. Each week, the students have prepared independently (without teacher, adult or other student input allowed) and on Saturday showed their hard work for the ‘Long Term Challenge’ to the judges. Teams also completed the ‘Spontaneous Challenge’ on the day which required rapid interchange of ideas, the ability to think creatively and well developed group cooperation skills. A fantastic day and we hope each student has learned many new things from this experience.
This little message is just to let you know that the Grade 5/6 teachers have already started organising the Gr 6 Graduation. HWPS Tradition involves the Grade 5 families and students helping to run the Graduation Night. Early in Term 4 we will be assembling a small team of parent helpers to help the teachers with some of the organisation and setting up of the event on the night.
Term 4 homework has also been tweaked for students and they will have a small task each fortnight linked to Graduation as well as a Leadership session in school where they will practice for the ceremony, vote on food, colours etc. and become prepared for the night.
